Navamsa, Dwadasamsa and Trimsamsa

Navamsas : Each sign being divided into 9 equal parts and there being 12 such signs, there are in all 12x9 or 108 such divisions in the ecliptic. The ecliptic contains 27x4 or 108 stellar quarters or Nakshatrapadas; it follows therefore that a Navamsa is a Nakshatrapada, that is one fourth of a lunar mansion. The 108 Navamsas beginning from the first point of Mesha bear the same names as the twelve rashis of the Zodiac counted over and over again.

Mesha, Simha, Dhanu begin with the Navamsa of  Mesha.
Vrishabha, Kanya, Makara begin with the Navamsa of Makara.
Mithuna, Tula, Kumbha begin with the Navamsa of Tula.
Kataka, Vrischika, Meena begin with the Navamsa of Kataka.

Dwadasamsas : Each sign being divided into 12 equal parts there are 144 dwadasamsas. They bear the same names as those of the 12 rashis. The name of the first Dwadasamsa of a particular rashi  is the name of the rashi itself. So that the 12 Dwadasamsas of Mesha are Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, &c., ending with Meena. Those of Vrishabha are Vrishabha, Mithuua, Kataka, &c., ending with Mesha. Those of Mithuna are Mithuna, Kataka, Simha, &c., ending with Vrishabha and so on.

The Lord or Ruler of each navamsa and dwadasamsa is the rashi lord itself.

Trimsamsas : A trimsamsa is one degree of the zodiac.

In odd rashis ie. Mesha, Mithuna, Simha, Tula, Dhanu, Kumbha, the first 5 degrees are ruled by Mars, next 5 degrees are ruled by Saturn, next 8 degrees ruled by Jupiter, next 7 degrees ruled by Mercury and last 5 degrees ruled by Venus.

In even rashis ie. Vrishabha, Kataka, Kanya, Vrischika, Makara, Meena, the first 5 degrees are ruled by Venus, next 5 degrees are ruled by Mercury, next 8 degrees ruled by Jupiter, next 7 degrees ruled by Saturn and last 5 degrees ruled by Mars

Six modes of dividing the Ecliptic

  1. Rasi (sign) in which the ecliptic is divided into 12 equal parts of 30° each          (Zodiac contains 12 rashis)
  2. Hora in which each sign is divided into two equal parts of 15° each           (Zodiac contains 24 horas)
  3. Drekkana in which a sign is divided into three equal parts of 10° each         (Zodiac contains 36 drekkanas)
  4. Navamsa in which a sign is divided into nine equal parts of 3° 20' each        (Zodiac contains 108 navamsas)
  5. Dwadasamsa, in which a sign is divided into twelve equal parts of 2° 30' each           (Zodiac contains 144 dwadasamsas)
  6. Trimsamsa, in which a sign is divided into thirty equal parts of a degree each         (Zodiac contains 360 trimsamsa)

Degrees

Zodiac is 360 degrees.

Each degree is split up into 60 parts, each part being 1/60 of a degree.
These parts are called minutes.

Each minute is split up into 60 parts, each part being 1/60 of a minute. These parts are called seconds.

27 nakshatras

The 360o zodiac is divided into 27 constellations called nakshatras or lunar mansions. Each nakshatra is 13o 20' of the zodiac. A nakshatra is further divided into 4 equal parts called nakshatra-padas.Each Pada is 3o 20' of the zodiac, the zodiac contains a total of 108 padas. Thus each rashi contains 9 nakshatrapadas.
